Green is a great colour theme to work with and is one of my favourite colours, With its natural look and feel you can combine it with many different options, such as frosty and sparkly ornaments & fabrics to create a more formal look and feeling for your home and dining table. Using some natural elements like curly willow & twigs you can enhance your Christmas decorating to make it feel woodsy and natural like the outdoors. Combining the different shades of greens such as yellow toned greens with blue toned greens will give you a great mixture of colour tones that will make an awesome look.   Christmas wreaths are great to use to decorate your front door &create a long and lasting seasonal look that is very inviting to family & friends.

Hanukkah 2014 – December 17th – December 24th

Hanukkah is an 8 day Jewish holiday also known as the Festival of Lights that commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE. Hanukkah is celebrated starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar and is observed for eight nights and days. The observation of Hanukkah is done with lighting lights of a unique candelabrum called Menorah or Hanukkah. The Menorah is lit each night with the progression to eight on the final night of the holiday.

Throughout the 8 day holiday, Hanukkah traditions include a series of rituals that are performed daily. There are no obligations to refrain from activities that are forbidden on the Sabbath, as Hanukkah is not a “Sabbath like” holiday.

Other Hanukkah traditions include the custom of eating foods that are fried or baked in oil (preferably olive oil). This custom is related to the commemoration of the miracle of a small flask of oil keeping the flame in the temple alight for eight days. Foods that are traditional include potato pancakes (latkes) and jam filled doughnuts (fritters) that are deep fried in oil. Doughnut fillings can include strawberry jelly, chocolate cream, vanilla cream, and caramel.

Another popular ritual during Hanukkah is the spinning of the dreidel. This is a popular game which involves a four sided top with Hebrew letters on each side. The game involves spinning the dreidel and betting on which Hebrew letter will show when the spinning stops.

Over time Hanukkah has become more festive and somewhat Christmas like. Hanukkah gifts are received, which often include one gift for each of the eight nights of the holiday. Family gatherings are also centered around festive meals. Home decorations can include fresh flower arrangements in traditional colors of blue and whites.

November Birth Month Flowers – Chrysanthemums

The birth month flower for November is the Chrysanthemum. They are perennial flowering plants that come in a variety of colors and are native to northeastern Europe and Asia. Florists often refer to them as mums. They are very hardy and are often used in floral designs. With the variety of colors that are available they can be used year round for all seasonal flower arrangements. Chrysanthemums are bush like in composition and have dark evergreen leaves. Their stems comprise of multiple blooms clustered on one stem. If you have them in an outdoor garden they will bloom from summer to autumn.

The Chrysanthemum name comes from two Greek words – gold (Chrysos) and flower (anthemon). Their meaning symbolizes cheerfulness and optimism. In relation to Feng Shui chrysanthemums bring happiness and laughter in the house.

Chrysanthemums are very popular flowers that are often combined with other flowers to make lovely flower arrangements. These flowers are great for birthday gifts. As seen with country chrysanthemums this arrangement is a perfect birthday flower gift for anyone who has a November birthday, the beautiful fall color tones can be seen here with the combination of a variety of mums.
